I encourage my scholars to live to learn, defy the odds, and dare to dream!
Our classroom is a whirlwind of activity with inquisitive 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade scholars. Although they have severe emotional disturbances, attention issues, and learning disabilities, they love coming to school. Each day, I reinforce positive behavior by incorporating laughter with learning; however, there are times when my scholars need their own space to regulate their emotions. Without proper structure, my scholars tend to experience feelings of failure, lack of acceptance, and high levels of bullying among their peers.
The families of these scholars struggle with poverty, low literacy rates, and stressful living situations. These dynamics often serve as a barrier to learning. My scholars simply want access to the same opportunities as those who come from higher-income neighborhoods.
My Project
At any given time of the day, my students are prone to tantrums and aggressive behaviors. For this reason, I decided to develop a calm-down corner where students can go for a predetermined amount of time without feeling as though they've been banished and rejected.
Since an angry mind tends to activate the fight or flight response, my students need an inviting space in our classroom that contains fidgets, drawing/writing materials, and soft lighting to help them cool down before return to the general learning environment.
These articles can calm-down and quell negative behaviors. It is my hope that employing this intervention will help my students reflect on their behaviors and learn how to better manage their feelings.
