Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
High School can be very challenging to students for a variety of different reasons. Between language barriers, mental health issues, familial issues and passing classes, my students are constantly dealing with a number of obstacles. Majority of my students are from low-income families and are English learners and have very little to no support at home. Often times, school is their safe place. School is where they get fed and place where they have the support (computers, internet, etc) they need to be successful. One aspect of my student lives that I find inspiring is that those who walk to school pass people who are homeless or in gangs and regardless of the problems at home or on their streets, these students are showing up to school.
High school is a very difficult time for students to figure out who they are and what they want to become.
In my classroom, I aspire to make real world connections to the curriculum in order to keep my students motivated and to keep them thinking about their future. I want my students to be global learners who believe in themselves and in their future.
My Project
These materials will allow my students to have more choices for their reading. While most of my students read below grade level, having books that are interesting and relate to their gender, culture, and age will help bring the love reading to my students. Each book chosen has a different type of author, plot, and conflict in order to reach more of my students.
My goal is to have each student find a genre that they like to read to follow them far after they have left my classroom.
Many students don't like to read, and most of the students are not exposed to books relatable to them. Without having the personal funds to purchase a book or simply not knowing what type of book they would like, I hope this project will begin to reach more of my students and show them there are books out there for everyone!
