My Students

At The Learning Community, we believe that literacy empowers each individual to have a voice, assume community responsibility and take social action. 90% of our students qualify for free and reduced price lunch but 100% have important stories to tell. These books will provide opportunities for my students to make personal connections with literature empowering them to become leaders.

The Learning Community is a vibrant public charter school serving 500 students from Central Falls, Providence and Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

We are a K-8 school proving poverty is not a barrier to achievement. 82% of our students are Latino, 13% are Black, 6% are White, and 0.4% are Native American. Central Falls is the poorest city in Rhode Island, with 27 percent of its residents below the poverty line.

My Project

When you read a book as an adolescent it becomes a part of your identity in a very special way. After reading "Jane Eyre" in middle school I decided I wanted to become a teacher. The ways in which these books will inspire my students are endless. One of my students could become a dramatic play-write after reading "A Raisin in the Sun", a historian after reading "Chains", a social worker after reading "Money Hungry", or a social activist after reading "€œThe Revolution of Evelyn Serrano"€. By buying these books, you are helping shape the minds of American'€™s next generation of thinkers and leaders.

At The Learning Community, our students are meeting or exceeding the state average in all subject areas despite our 90% poverty rate (2012 NECAP State Standardized Assessment).

These books will help our students continue to grow. Please help promote literacy within our community!
