Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The band program in our district serves 6th-12th grade, offering beginner, intermediate, and upper level instrumental music classes. Our student population is 52% Hispanic and the vast majority come from low-income families. We are a Title I school in which most of the students are on free and reduced lunch. Our band students differ from many. We are a close knit family, united in a common goal.
The students involved in the instrumental music program are talented, driven, and genuinely want to be successful through music.
They stay after school for lessons and rehearsals in order to hone their skills. Many of them wish to play in college ensembles, receive music scholarships, and major in music.
Regardless of the many challenges faced by students from a low-income rural school, our district genuinely wants to offer our students as many educational opportunities as they can, but funding a band program is quite expensive and new equipment is a rarity.
If you've ever been involved in band, you know that music is an important outlet for many students. Music gives students a voice and a way to express themselves in which other subjects cannot.
My Project
This carrier will be used by the high school marching band at football games, marching contests, and parades. Our band program is very active, and is an integral part of our community.
The purchase of these carriers will be used for many years to come and will ultimately benefit the entire group.
The snare drum carriers that we are currently using are constantly coming apart and the padding is completely worn out. They are very uncomfortable for the students to wear and in some cases, the carriers have caused injuries to the students neck and shoulders. The carriers we are using are about 15 years old and are long overdue to be replaced.
