This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are kindergarten to fifth-grade students who are eligible for special education services. Because of their intensive learning and behavioral needs, they receive all or the majority of their academic instruction in a self-contained classroom. However, this project would benefit all students with sensory needs at our school!
Our elementary school is in a poverty-stricken urban neighborhood in the Southeastern United States.
Because of this, both our school and the students' families lack money to donate to classroom projects. With little funding, it is difficult to provide these students with the educational excellence they deserve.
My Project
Our sensory room will be a therapeutic space with a variety of equipment and materials. It will be used to help students who are struggling emotionally and/or behaviorally cope as well as provide students with special needs personalized sensory input.
Students' emotional and sensory needs must be met to engage in maximum learning.
Students will be able to regulate heightened emotional states by using the room. They can engage in physical stimulation to meet their sensory needs in order to make themselves available for later learning by using the mats, bouncing, jumping, and hooping. They can also explore their sense of hearing and learn about music by making it with the equipment.
Thank you for considering donating to our project that will benefit our school!
