Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in a predominantly low-income community. All of my students receive a free or reduced-price lunch, and most eat their first meal of the day at school. Gang violence, drugs, and crime are everyday features of the neighborhood. However, among the craziness of the neighborhood live some of the most committed parents I have had the privilege of working with!
Despite the socioeconomic hardships of their community, my students are eager and enthusiastic to learn and are some of the most empathetic and compassionate little humans I have ever known!
They have a resiliency unmatched by any other group of students I have taught. The majority of my students come from homes that are plagued by poverty, instability, violence, and other traumatizing circumstances that are often associated with urban poverty. And yet, they endure with smiles on their faces and dreams in their hearts!
My colleagues and I strive every day to empower our students and to help them actualize their greatness and potential!
My Project
My school has officially decided to departmentalize fifth grade which means my incoming 5th graders will have 90 minutes of science everyday! Full-time 5th-grade science means we need a working lab which requires me to build a science laboratory from scratch! I have searched every corner in my school building for science classroom furniture but I am coming up short for seating options!
These 18" stools will enable twelve fifth-graders, to sit comfortably at their lab tables to design and conduct experiments and explore scientific phenomena!
I currently have six of these same stools that I use for small group instruction. My students have raved about how comfortable and portable they are so I am confident these stools will offer support and comfort so they are able to focus, learn, fully participate, and engage in our daily science lessons/ experiments.
Our new fifth-grade science lab is also on the smaller side. These stools are a great "fit" for our classroom as they reduce clutter and open up space for my students to walk to and from various science stations, the science classroom library, our computer stations, and the washing station for lab materials.
It also frees up physical space as many of our experiments require our students to work not only on their science lab tables but around their tables as well. The stools can easily be stacked and placed to the side and or placed under the table. For example, in an experiment on Earth and Space, my students create and test models of solar and lunar eclipses. The project requires them to move/ manipulate their models while standing and moving around the room! These stools will not only provide a comfortable seat, but they will maximize our working space!
