Help me give my students materials like pillows for a calm space they can go to when the world is falling apart. They learn best when they feel safe and calm!
This is a Self-Contained Behavioral Unit. These students have experienced severe trauma in their lives from very young ages. Many have been in foster care and group homes. These kids are amazing and very resilient. Our classroom is able to help them feel safe and stable.
My goal is to provide a space that is comfortable and structured.
I want these students to gain confidence so they may return to regular classrooms, and eventually, their neighborhood school. These students deserve the same opportunities as all of their peers.
My Project
My students are amazing and work hard, but have more disadvantages than their typical peers. I am creating an area for them where they can feel safe and calm during the school day.
Let's give these student's a calming space to help them when times are the most difficult!
For my project, I have selected different items to add to a calming place. Students will be able to utilize the pillows, beds, and stuffed animals to help soothe them when they are agitated. Additionally, each item has a different texture, so children may advocate for themselves by selecting the item they feel is most helpful for them.
When students are agitated they also benefit from fidgets to keep their hands busy or minds on something positive. The fidgets I have selected all have different textures and functions, so students may find the right fit for their needs.
Once a child's basic needs are met, they are at their best time for learning. After they are calm and able to regulate their emotions, they can practice social skill through the games and activities I have chosen.
I hope for the very best for my students. School is challenging, particularly when you have a disability. They deserve to have a safe and calming area they can grow in!
