Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both inside and outside of our classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I make sure to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences each and every day.
My students are creative, clever and naturally inquisitive.
They are very curious about current events and love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free breakfast and lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I strive to enhance their life experiences through reading. I focus on their potential, their learning, and social-emotional growth. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly make our classroom a haven of fun and exciting learning opportunities throughout their school day. I am hopeful to inspire my students to continue on a path of academic excellence, even after they leave our classroom.
My Project
A year-long subscription to Scholastic Magazine will help motivate my students to keep up with current events, in a format that is kid-friendly and highly motivating because it has an online component to accompany the magazine.
Our school has no social studies curriculum, so we will be using the Scholastic Magazines to help my students to be better informed about the world around them.
When you know more about the world around you, then you can become a responsible and active citizen of the world.
The Zen Buddha Boards will help my students to keep calm and carry on with their learning. Students paint on the surface with water and their creation will come to life in bold design. As the water slowly evaporates, their art will magically disappear leaving them with a clean slate and a clear mind, ready to go back to their learning.
