Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are part of a public school district in a major city in Illinois. The school includes students in grades kindergarten through 5th grade. They are primarily Latino students who come from low-income families.
The students at my school are remarkable children with unique personalities and incredible talents.
The school is part of a strong community with many caring families. Like many schools in Illinois, funding for supplies and programs in my school is limited. We rely heavily on donations and grants in order to provide the students with a well-rounded experience at no cost to their families.
My Project
For students who have difficulty regulating their bodies and managing their emotions, school can be extremely challenging. The materials I am requesting will help me teach students how to independently self-regulate and be mindful during class to ensure that they are successful in school.
Every student deserves the chance to reach their full potential.
However, students come to school with a lot of things on their mind and a broad range of abilities. For those who may have trouble regulating or who have stressors in their families, it is so important that they learn coping skills like deep breathing, guided meditation, and yoga. These skills will not only help prepare them to handle challenges, but also help them to self-regulate and alleviate stress in their lives.
I am asking for a number of books and mindfulness cards to directly teach different calming strategies and mindfulness activities because I believe that students who are able to engage in these practices are more successful in both school and life. I am asking for Wiggle Seats to provide as a tool for students who have difficulty regulating their bodies and focusing during class.
