My students need a BB-8 Robot, Minidrones with accessories, M.A.X Robotic Interactive Toy, and a low table to collaborate at as they work in their STEAM teams to discover a world of programming and robotics.
My 3rd grade students work hard and dream big. They are eager to soar academically and understand that progress monitoring is essential to the learning environment. My students recognize that failure is an option in our learning lab, because it means they are trying. They know they will make mistakes but embrace them as learning opportunities.
We are known for the Blue Angels soaring through the sky, just as our students are known for soaring academically.
We are a Title 1 school located in a rural area which includes a great deal of farmland overseen by hardworking and patriotic families.
My Project
Due to the limited amount of classroom funds, we do not have enough resources to immerse students into the world of robotics. The BB8, Parrot Minidrones, and M.A.X. Robotic Interactive Toy will expose my third graders to a growing industry in software engineering. Programming will allow my third graders to express themselves in a creative manner while creating content versus consuming it. During the creating process, they will be using problem solving skills that are crucial to the learning process. More importantly, my third graders will be required to build upon prior knowledge while thinking critically to perform similar tasks as a software engineer.
“Coding is a new type of literacy, and will be a large part of future jobs”.
They will not only learn to code and program these devices, but also the importance of collaborating with their peers to become successful. This is where the low table comes into play. It will make for the perfect space for my STEAMovators to apply the 4 C’s (communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity) and to make real world connections as they work to program these amazing resources.
T
his project excites my STEAMovators and will guide them to Imagine – Invent - Inspire!
