KEEP Books™: A Preschool Take-Home Book Program I am a first-year preschool teacher of 20 three- and four-year olds in an inner city Child Parent Center in the Chicago Public Schools. I am seeking support to establish a take-home program of books that my children can KEEP. These books support and supplement our new literacy curriculum. Researchers have found that reading performance is directly correlated to the amount of time children spend in reading activities outside the classroom. When young children have increased access to books in the home there are significant changes in literacy achievement. Unfortunately, my children do not have access to books in their homes or someone who regularly reads to them. They love to hear me read stories; even the same stories over and over again. I want to capture that love of reading by giving each of my children a new little book to take home every week so they may develop the habit of reading every night. To achieve this, they must have access to their own books at home and must be able to “read” them. Further, these books must be research based, child friendly, interesting, and inexpensive. The KEEP Books™ meet all these criteria and provides the most promising solution. The KEEP Books™ are very inexpensive and are designed by literacy experts from Ohio State University to support emergent readers. For example, large sized print is separated from the illustration and is placed on the page to establish a top, left starting position. Interesting stories and illustrations focus on familiar experiences and thereby encourage oral language development. The children can have their names written on their books, color the illustrations, and, after several readings in class, take the books home to read again and again to family members, friends, pets, and their little brothers and sisters. There is a structured plan for me to follow that incorporates Big KEEP Books in the classroom. These big books enable me to introduce the little books and direct class readings. Specially designed KB boxes provide the opportunity for me to show the children how to store and care for their books at home. Your donation will allow each child to KEEP 32 little books with print plus 3 blank books in which the children “author” their own stories in class. I will place a label in each little book identifying you as the donor. I am very excited about this project. With your full sponsorship, I can ensure that my class will have a sufficient supply of their own books to read at home every day. Thank you for your generosity and for helping my children to become successful readers.
