My Project

As a newly hired high school biology teacher in the beautiful town of Kea'au, I'm seeking support for a project to help my students better achieve outcomes aligned with the Hawaii State Learning Standards. The goal is to inspire a passion for biology and deepen students' understanding of life sciences. This project includes updated instructional materials, modern technology, and hands-on activities tailored to meet specific learning objectives.

My biology students, most from low socioeconomic backgrounds, have been without a long term teacher for several months and are in great need of concise, well designed lesson plans and updated laboratory equipment and experiments.

As a newly hired teacher, I am requesting gift certificates for Teachers Pay Teachers. This is a platform that offers a wealth of resources created by experienced educators, ensuring that my lessons remain current, relevant, and aligned with the latest educational standards. These lesson plans and materials will allow me to bridge the holes in the current patchwork of lesson materials provided to me by teachers who taught the course many years ago. No materials were left by the previous instructor.

I am also requesting two microscopes with digital cameras and USB hookups. Although Kea'au High does have microscopes, we lack modern scopes with digital cameras. These would allow me to guide students through demonstrations (projecting the camera to a screen/board) as well as enable students to do collaborative laboratory work in medium sized groups.

Finally, I am requesting materials for a genetic taste testing lab. Taste is a powerful sense, and the materials selected have common genetic variations that result in a wide range of taste responses. This will help my students directly connect genetic variation with "invisible" qualities they have.
