The cost a digital camera, Adobe Photoshop, paper and ink cartridges is $1065, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
I want my students to take digital photos of the changes in landscape affected by Katrina (stumps of trees, trimmed limbs, etc.) then reflect on the significance of the loss or presence of the particular tree. Also reflect on the beauty and positive events that may have revolved around the tree, like family picnics, flowers, fruit, etc.
The photos taken would be manipulated through the use of Photoshop, and the reflections would be translated into visual ideas to combine with the tree photos to create a digital photo collage. The reflections could include text, or other images that relate to the positive aspects of the memorialized tree. The students could take photos of the landmarks to indicate the location of the tree, or record the address, including this information in their reflective imagery.
I am an itinerant visual arts teacher in a public school system just affected by Katrina. I teach elementary students at 6 different schools, from grades 1-5. This project would involve 35 children. Since the software is single use, I will do the project at one of the schools, expanding it to regular classrooms, as an Earth Day activity.
I would need the Adobe Photoshop CS2 software program, a digital camera, the Classroom in a Book Photoshop Manual, color ink cartridges, and printing paper.
This would be a great chance for the students to experience a new art form through technology, as well as a healing experience to work through the changes they've been through. Their prints would be exhibited at the annual Earth Day festival if completed by April 20th, or at the annual art show at a local mall, to be seen by a large part of the community.
