Kangaroo Band Needs Some Cymbals
My students need a pair of good quality cymbals and accessories.
Imagine wanting to learn percussion, but all you have is 30 plus year old cast offs from other band programs. That is the reality for my percussionists.
My students attend an inner city public school, in an economically depressed area.
My students worry about what they are going to eat next, and where are they going to live when their family gets evicted, again. For most students, school is the most secure aspect in their lives.
For the past few years, 4th and 5th grade students at my school have had the opportunity to be in band. It is a constant battle every year to get enough instruments and supplies together for the students. This year, I have been adding percussion, so I can take them to contest in the spring. At the moment, most of my supplies are old, half-broken castoffs from other schools. Therefore, I am requesting a good quality cymbal set to give my students a better experience.
If my students are going to make it through college, they are going to have to rely on grants, loans, and scholarships.
Playing an instrument gives them one more tool in their "bag" to help make this dream a reality. I am hoping that higher quality instruments will aid in this endeavor.
