Kalimba Sounds and Vocal Exploring!

My Students

I am working to give my students an unforgettable general music experience through newer resources. It is clear that my students enjoy music and are adjusting well to a new music teacher. The students I teach are so diverse; they are patient, kind, open to these new experiences and ways of learning music.

I love seeing my student's faces when they are learning something new in music class.

It propels me to make lesson plans for weeks and weeks to come. These students greet me every day with genuine smiles and big hugs. Every child in the school knows their music teacher, Miss Cunningham. They make me feel special, and I would like them to know they are special, have unique abilities, and have a purpose. I want my students to use music as a creative outlet and use hands-on activities to feel and express that.

Being in a Title I school, I am limited on resources. Many instruments are needed to update my music program and keep students creating. Through DonorsChoose this has been changing dramatically and all help is appreciated. If funded, the students will have immersive music opportunities and a lifelong love of music.

My Project

I am always looking for resources that my students can use and have fun while being creative. During our world instrument units my students were very interested in the African instrument the kalimba. In my class, we do music centers to have students explore different instruments. My students would like a kalimba center to play in small groups. This will have them exploring pitch, note duration, and rhythm. There is a lot to learn about the kalimba such as the part of the instrument and how to manipulate the note duration.

My student love using hands-on activities and they get really excited when we have new music centers.

I am hopeful that we can get Kalimbas as a music center and use bouncy balls to explore with our voices. I believe since virtual learning, students have lost confidence when it comes to singing in a group. My goal is to do as many fun singing activities as possible to get them singing loud and proud. These bouncy balls will put energy and fun into their voice! Thank you for supporting their music success and considering our unique musical journey.
