Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Title I (high poverty) School in Greenville, SC. I currently have 24 precious students. My students are very dedicated and want to learn. The majority of my students survive day to day with some type of government assistance. Many of my families' main focus is surviving on a daily basis.
Could you imagine living day to day, not knowing if you will have the ability to provide the basic needs for you child?
This is the environment my students face every day! If a parent's main focus is survival, then unfortunately the parents will not be able to meet their child's educational needs.
My Project
At the end of the school year, our K5 Program has an Annual Water Play Day. This is a day our students get to celebrate all the hard work and accomplishments of the year. We have had Water Play Day for approximately 10 years. Our students really enjoy this day, when previous students come back to see us, they talk about the fun they had at Water Play Day. We are in need of a new water slide. The water slide is the activity enjoyed the most at Water Play Day. We have approximately 100 students who participate in this event annually.
Water Play Day is a once in a life time experience for our students; they do not participate in extracurricular activities on weekends, holiday breaks, or summer break.
Many of our students do not get to experience fun opportunities outside of school. They look forward to coming to school everyday!
