My Students

As teachers in a low-income school, our students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Our school is in a large district that has a diverse population and higher needs than other schools. Despite the many challenges they face, we are looking to keep things simple and provide our students with creative and meaningful learning experiences that relate to science, technology, engineering, and math.

Our students are hands on learners, big hearted, and excited about learning.

They like to move, they love to learn and love lots of positive attention. Many of our students have not been out of our city and do not realize how big the world is around them. From the minute they walk into our school we want to set a foundation where they can start to understand their true potential and all the opportunities that await them in this age of global citizens. By giving THREE classrooms of kindergartener access to these STEM activities we hope to inspire our earliest learners to shoot for the stars!

My Project

Having the materials and corresponding books for these S.T.E.M. lessons will help engage our THREE classrooms of kindergarten students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics as they learn to think critically about the world around them.

K is for S.T.E.M.

as our kindergarteners embark on a new way of learning about the world. Using the teacher book, Picture Perfect STEM Lessons, our classrooms of kinders will be given the opportunity to explore everything from the warming effects of the sun, by comparing temperatures of sunny and shady surfaces, to exploring the cause and effect relationships with forces and motion by experimenting with how pushes and pulls can stop and start motion and change an object's direction while participating in a design challenge to get a dog, Newton, (riding in a matchbox car) into his doghouse (plastic cup with arch cutout).

We choose eight lessons from Picture Perfect STEM that we believe will not only help to meet the Minnesota State Standards for science and math in kindergarten, but will also be highly engaging and relatable to our students. Each of the eight lessons (each to be kept in a reusable plastic file box to used yearly) require a fiction and non-fiction mentor text to be used as a springboard for learning, as well as simple materials that students will use in a design challenge. For example, in the lesson titled "Flight of the Pollinators," after reading "Flowers Are Calling" and "What is Pollination", students end the lesson by creating a pollinator (each student getting their own glove to make as their pollinator) that will "catch" as much pollen (pom poms ) from a one "flower" (plastic cup) to move to another flower (plastic cup). It is these simple materials that will help to build a foundation for scientific critical thinking.
