Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our students are resilient. They are some of the hardest working people that we have ever met. Currently, I have the privilege of working with 160+ students across grades K-2. Over three-quarters of the students at our school come from low-income housing and our school is situated in, historically, one of the most crime-ridden neighborhoods in the city. This is due in part to the lack of resources. Providing resources is imperative to create a thriving community.

Everyone deserves to have their basic needs met.

To start the students and their community on a path to self-sufficiency through gardening is a journey—but one that will benefit them beyond their school experience.

My Project

At our school, we believe in the power of hands-on, project-based, and experiential learning. Students at our school are at an extremely formative age where experience is everything!

Cultivating a garden is a phenomenal way for students to gain hands-on experience and apply their knowledge of all subjects—from science and art, to literacy and math.

This project will increase social emotional learning, collaboration, and practical and academic knowledge. Students will be able to practice both their fine motor and gross motor skills in digging, planting, raking, and watering under the supervision of an adult. They will learn about the basics of caring for plants and the environment at-large.

This project will begin as an extracurricular activity after school in the fall. Students will be able to opt-in based on interest. Outside of this group, other students and teachers in the school will be able to support! We will be planting native plants and those suitable to our particular climate. Outdoor activities will be supplemented with curriculum on plants, gardening, sustainability, and art. As a bonus—we hope to responsibly redistribute the food and plants back into the community!
