Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come excited to learn in two languages, as part of our Spanish Immersion Program that was adopted more than twelve years ago to meet the need of our cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Eight years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning, and it has provided a positive learning environment for everyone.
I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic background.
More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. All of my kindergarten students get an amazing and unique opportunity to start learning in English and Spanish from K to grade 12. 25% of my students' first language is English, and 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% speak another language at home and most are bilingual. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bicultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.
My Project
My students will be engage in distance learning at least two more months. We have been doing our Spanish and English writing lessons using whiteboards students received back in September.
My kindergarteners are ready to start writers workshop with actual paper and pencil.
Most of my students do not have a notebook or paper to successfully engage in our next phase of writing. Typically kindergarteners start writing short personal stories in two languages by now, but because of distance learning, it has been a challenge to write more than simple words or simple sentences in the white boards.
The notebooks are ideal for kindergarten, they have space on top of each page for drawing and lines on the bottom of the page for writing. The erasers and pencil sharpeners will help student stay focus on writing. They will the opportunity to take pictures of their writing and post them in our online learning app and also share during our live lessons. Writing is a critical skills in kindergarten and right now, my students are limited to do their writing in whiteboards. If this project gets funded, I will set up a time for families to pick up materials after school and I will drop off the rest at students' homes to make sure each student has exactly what is needed to be a successful writer.
