Help me give my students a common book (and these are great books!) that they can take home and we can all read, whether we are in school, or online, or both.
I have great students, but reading isn't usually their first love. That's part of what makes it fun getting to be their teacher. We use these stories to unify us, as we spend an entire year together. My students can see themselves in these books.
We want to read one book together in the fall and one in January to help unify our classroom, no matter where we are this school year.
My Project
There is nothing like everyone getting to read the same book at the same time. Oh, of course my students get choice in what they read. But to start the year, we interact together with a great book. It's our way of getting to know each other, and figuring ourselves out as a class. In January, we do it again. We read Swear to Howdy and House Arrest, which are both excellent books.
Just imagine how students will connect, with one less thing to worry about, no matter where we are, when we all read the same book.
Some days I read aloud to my students, some days they volunteer to read aloud, and other days they get to chill on their own and get lost in a book.
Having the book at their fingertips makes all the difference in the world.
