The students in my classroom are mixed grade levels. Some have been very successful in math, while others have struggled with the content. They are hard workers and many have the passion and desire to pursue math beyond the classroom. Students learn math through critical thinking and perseverance.
ALL of my students are amazing and have the ability to find success in mathematics.
While that path to success takes various paths, they all eventually reach a destination. In the class, I attempt to relate math to the outside world as often as possible so students see the relevance.
My number one goal is to get students to see math as not just numbers and letters, but as skills needed for logic and critical thinking.
My Project
I'm requesting an adjustable height standing table for students to gather around in a portion of the classroom, as well as several logic puzzles and manipulatives. This desk will have a weekly puzzle for students to explore and solve.
Students need the opportunity to think creatively and critically in a low-pressure situation.
Math isn't all about numbers and letters; it's about logic, thinking critically, and perseverance. In addition to the standing table, I'm requesting several logic games and puzzles: a set of Geometiles Building Set, Shape Logic Board Game, Interlocking Disks for students to just create, Shape by Shape Creative Logic Puzzle, Izzi Puzzle, Shape by Shape, Tangrams, and Block by Block. I'm also requesting some logic and puzzle books: Puzzle Box Volume 1, 2, and 3, Area Mazes Volume 1 and 2, Can You Solve my Problems?, and Code Breaker (looking at cryptography).
Each week, a new logic puzzle or game will be set on the table. Students will have the opportunity to "play" at the table during passing periods, when they have completed classwork, lunch time, or when they just need a break. By funding this project, you will provide a safe environment for all of my high school students to think and play creatively and critically, with the hope that this will bring less negative connotations toward mathematics.
Mathematics is used EVERYWHERE and the ability to persevere, think creatively, and critically think are essential skills in the adult world.
