Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Pencils Please! My first grade students don't have pencils. I've been supplying them, and so have their parents, but when a six year old who is bursting with ideas that she wants to write breaks the point on her two inch stub of a pencil, it's hard not to empathize with her subsequent frustration. My students in the Bronx are children of recent immigrants. Through their own hard work this year, they have made great gains in academics, and in their ability to speak English and be part of a classroom community. I work to make the classroom and calm place for my students, and having readily available materials would help greatly in doing this. I want to have a box on each table with the supplies that they'll need for most of our work: pencils, sharpeners, index cards, and white board markers. Being able to get to work without having to borrow materials from a friend or search around the room will increase my class' learning this year.
