My Students
My students walk into school every morning excited to be there. They are ready to explore and learn. They will spend the year being challenged and making discoveries through student-centered learning.
I work in a Title 1 school where 81% of our students are on the free and reduced lunch program.
Despite hardships, my students are always eager to learn. I want to make sure our classroom meets all of their needs and sets them up for success, both now and in the future.
My Project
When was the last time you bought school supplies for your child? I know that it has cost me nearly $100 some years, just for my own son. How do we address this when working in a school where a large percentage of the population is on free and reduced lunch?
A majority of my students show up on the first day of school with no supplies.
Imagine the anxiety this causes. The first day of school is an event that makes everyone a little nervous. You are walking into the unknown. Will you like your teacher? The other students in your class? Will any of your friends be with you or will your class be full of strangers? Imagine how this normal bit of fear is compounded by the fact that you will be walking in with no supplies. Will the other students judge you? Will you be the only one without the things you need? Will the others know you can't afford supplies? I want to end this.
My students need notebooks, pencils, index cards, scissors, erasers and other school supplies to start the year off ready to learn! I want all of my students to begin the year with all the supplies they need so they can focus on learning, not trying to meet their basic needs.
