Help me give my students high quality, library-bound books that contain up-to-date, reliable information about our United States for their research projects.
Our school is a Title I elementary school of around 290 students, tucked against a beautiful bay in a small town in Alaska. As the only elementary school in our town, we benefit from having a wide variety of backgrounds and abilities in our student body.
I have the pleasure of seeing students aged PreK through grade five during the week and offer different activities and lessons to promote movement throughout the library.
Our students enjoy exploring in collaborative groups and alone, whether it's browsing the shelves for a good book, learning about book awards in a 'mock committee', becoming better digital citizens, building a structure, putting a puzzle together, or reading to a 'reading buddy'.
Our library staff constantly works to create strong fiction and non-fiction collections for students to use for personal pleasure reading or to support school projects. Our school atmosphere promotes literacy, collaboration, and creativity and the library is embracing its role in supporting our students.
My Project
The United States is one of the largest countries in the world, and spans a variety of habitats and peoples. Because we live in a place that is far removed from the rest of the country, opening our students' eyes to other geographical regions is an important part of helping them gain insights into other landscapes and people around our country.
As our students learn about the regions of the United States, they need resources that provide them with factual, reliable, current information.
Many such resources are found online, but there is great value in offering print resources too. Students are able to browse print resources in a way that allows them to find facts or images that they may have otherwise missed in a perfunctory online search. And, by offering both print and online sources as places of inquiry and study, students develop better research skills.
Updating non-fiction resources regularly is critical to providing students with the best information possible. The state books in this project will do just that.
