Many of my students and teachers don't have the ability to learn online. They are depending on worksheet packets and whatever books they have at home. The teachers have never taught using this blended learning model. Despite the hardships they are facing with school being closed, they are eager learners. Many of their families have been disenfranchised from school for multiple generations.
We are just scratching the SURFACE with closing the digital divide with urban students.
My school is an elementary school located in an inner-city. We currently serve over 620 energetic students in grades Pre-K-5th. Over 98% of our students qualify for free lunch. Because of this free lunch status, many students’ only access to quality meals is through the breakfast and lunch program. Our school is located in a high poverty area with over 80.5% of the residents living below the poverty line and receiving state services.
My fabulous teachers have really taken to this new way of delivering instruction. However, there is a lot of support that is needed. As an Instructional Coach I have to support the teachers by providing feedback, modeling and sharing resources.
The Surface Pro will allow me to dramatically improve my distance learning support for my teachers and students.
Education is evolving and we must evolve our practices and delivery. The students still are yearning for high quality, rigorous instruction that is both engaging and authentic. Though the students and staff of my school experience a scarcity of resources in their community, innovative instruction is a necessity.
Help me close the digital divide for my urban school. As you can image since "schooling" is different now our students may experience some learning gaps. Your contribution will bring them closer to achieving their academic goals and success.
