I am currently a first grade teacher in a low socio-economically disadvantaged school district that was recently devastated by hurricane Harvey. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.
Despite the many challenges they face, they come to school daily with loving hearts, big smiling faces, and are eager to learn.
I would love to be able to offer them a classroom that is warm and welcoming. They deserve some "normalcy" in their lives.
As a teacher of first grader students, many of our lessons involve spending a lot of our time on the floor. This is where we have our morning meet and greet, almost all reading, phonics and math lessons are done in whole group circle time on the floor. Also most of our learning centers are done on the floor, as well. Currently they sit or lay on blankets on the cold cement floors.
Though they do not and have never complained, I would love to offer them a cozy, warmer space to learn in.
Many of my students are not living in their own homes and move from place to place, they deserve a stable, inviting learning environment.
