I teach two sections of an early childhood special education (ECSE) class. Our day is busy exploring various items to help develop all areas of development in the children. The materials in this project will enhance my ability to work on their physical development such as their gross motor skills.
My students are 3- to 5-year-old children with special needs in an ECSE classroom.
There are currently 24 students enrolled with a max of 24 students for the program. This year I have 11 girls and 13 boys in my classes. The majority of my students have language impairments and/or behavior difficulties. They are very curious and energetic students who love to explore. Our daily routine and use of visual supports in the classroom are very important to help my students develop and learn language. The classroom is housed within an elementary school which is a Title I building. I have 2 assistants in my classroom who help make the day run smoothly.
My Project
Preschool students are learning about their boundaries and how to be aware of other people. During our whole group movement time, my students are learning about their personal space and how to be aware of other children while running or riding a tricycle. My students have a weekly gym time where they can practice these skills. I was pleasantly surprised when my other project for two new tricycles was fully funded on the first day it was posted. I'm grateful to be getting two more tricycles for my students to ride. This project request is to replace some of the tricycles and riding coupes that are breaking and falling apart. Many of the bikes that are breaking are 15-20 years old. These tricycles and coupes are built with preschoolers in mind and last for many years.
With the long northern Michigan winters, my students love being able to ride bikes in the gym each week.
Some wish they could ride bikes everyday! Pedaling a bicycle or tricycle requires children to use bi-lateral coordination. It also increases their balance, muscle development, and stability. They also develop confidence when they master how to pedal a tricycle. After our time in the gym riding bikes, my students have better focus and attention to a story or group discussion.
