My students need books that exactly fit their reading level. My students who are beginning readers need access to good-fit books at the reading levels of D, E, and F.
I am a primary level teacher in a public school that primarily serves children from low-income backgrounds. This school serves students from kindergarten to eighth grade and provides breakfast, snack, and lunch at no cost. The school also partners with The Boys and Girls Club to ensure that the students have someplace to go after the school day ends. My students receive these services but also have their own individual needs and abilities. In my classroom, students aged 5-8 learn alongside each other in areas of phonics, reading, writing, math, and social-emotional learning. There is a great sense of community, support, and enthusiasm among my kiddos!
My Project
The majority of my students are beginning readers and need books that are at the right level for them. While I strive to make my classroom full of different genres and levels of books, there is a lack of books that are appropriate for beginning readers. I want my classroom library to offer students plenty of options for engaging, just-right books.
These students need books that not only interest them but are at their reading level, with the right amount of decodable words, simple sentence structures, and identifiable story elements.
These books will be used both in the classroom for reading instruction and at the children's homes for homework.
