Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I public elementary school. One hundred percent of our students receive free lunch. We are a large inner-city school with over 1,200 students. Over 80% of our students are English Language Learners. Many of our students' parents have multiple jobs to make ends meet. Technology, books, and an overall basic investment in education is not a focus for them. We serve homeless students, students with multiple families in the home, and foster children. Students' main opportunity for interaction with adults and others is at school.
Despite all of these obstacles, we have students excited and eager to learn and work hard.
Students are excited for all the classroom has to offer; safety, calm, opportunity, and fun. My students are so appreciative of the books and tools we already have.
My Project
These books will go directly into the children's hands on a daily basis. With these books, students will be able to self-select books at their own level to practice the reading skills taught to them. They just need enough books to give them practice and keep their interest.
I have purchased many books but we have 30 students in our classes now and we just don't have enough books-especially non fiction.
Each week the students select 10-12 books at their level to put in their "shopping bag". They keep the bag of books at their desk. At reading time, I teach them a reading strategy. I model it, and we do it together. Then they grab their bag of books, get comfy and practice the strategy using their own books at their independent reading level.
Each year I have homeless students in my class. Because these students are homeless they do not go to the library to obtain a library card either because they do not have an address or because they are not comfortable about it. Without this my students are denied access to quality literature and just books in general. These books I am asking for will be added to books I have already purchased and will allow my homeless students to gain access to books in their classroom, books they can add to their reading bags daily, as well as books they can borrow.
