Nestled right in the middle of a diverse neighborhood our school is filled with 400+ eager young learners Kindergarten- 4th grade. The area that the school services ranges from urban to suburban to rural all in one neighborhood. This provides our building the unique opportunity to pull together and create a community where differences are celebrated.
Our kindergarten students enter our classrooms with a wide range of experiences and exposure to learning opportunities.
Some have had the opportunity to attend preschool and have acquired a learning foundation. For others, this is their first organized learning experience, and for some this is their first experience in a large group of children. It is the teacher's challenge to pull those experiences together and create a school family that meets students needs and moves everyone forward to reach new goals.
My Project
As a teacher I am also a forever student, always learning about my craft and adapting to best practices. This new professional learning has led me to make the instructional move to using small group Math as my primary instructional method. This move has made it possible to target my teaching to each child's needs and I have seen an increase in student understanding and achievement. It is my hope that the addition of these hands-on materials will provide the support necessary for my students to grow even more.
In the hands of my students these materials will increase engagement at the small group table and have a positive effect on learning.
They will have the opportunity to roll dice, build number sentences, and show learning on ten frames. These new materials will provide my students hours of developmentally appropriate learning.
