Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a enthusiastic fourth grade teacher at a high poverty school. My students are fantastic learners from diverse backgrounds who deserve the very best. Teaching is my passion in life. I believe in the best practices for my wonderful students. However, my school does not have the funds to provide materials needed to implement these best practices. This is especially evident in my classroom library.
In the story, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Goldilocks struggled to find anything that was "just right" for her. The students in my class struggle with choosing a book from the library the same way Goldilocks struggled in the fairy tale. Books are either too hard or too easy, rarely are the books they choose "just right." This impedes their ability to develop as independent successful readers.
The materials that I have chosen will provide my classroom library with a selection of leveled literature that will be "just right" for each student in my room. Students will be able to go to the library and choose a book that they are confident in reading with the goal of developing the skill of independent reading for pleasure and knowledge.
