Imagine if the majority of your time was spent in one neighborhood, with limited access to the outside world. Our students are inquisitive learners who deserve the chance to think big about the world. They are problem solvers, eager to do hands-on work and make new discoveries.
A great challenge we face in our classroom is creating a curriculum that can be accessed by all students.
Our students have a deep curiosity about the world and about how things work. The neighborhood our school is located in is a high poverty community, and many of our students lack resources and comfortable space at home to be productive learners. Our school classroom is one place where we can offer students an environment conducive to comfort and learning.
My Project
These books will broaden the options for struggling readers in 5th grade. When book-shopping in the classroom library, many students are disappointed at the options available to them at their reading level. The writing matches their reading level but the subject matter is immature and uninteresting.
Our struggling readers are looking for books to inspire them to become better readers.
The books in this project cover more interesting topics and also look more like the books that their 5th grade peers are reading. This project will help make our classroom library a place where ALL readers can find that 'just right' book!
