Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In our school we have 22 first grade students currently that come ready to learn each day.
The majority of the students spend their day at school.
They arrive as early as 7:00 am and leave as late as 6:00 pm while parents are working in the nearby industrial area. All my students are English Language Learners, and all qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. My students attend a wonderful project-based school that promotes them to learn by asking questions and to think critically. Our instructional program uses their primary language as the building block for literacy, while building English Language skills and conceptual understanding in the content areas of mathematics, science, social studies, and the arts. We follow a balanced literacy approach, and phonics is an important part of our program.
My Project
In order for students to love reading they need to be given the opportunity to select books that they are interested in reading and that are at their instructional reading level. Students need leveled fiction and nonfiction books to choose from. Our classroom library is in need of this. I would love my students to be able to have several leveled books in their book bag to read during Readers Workshop. At this point students are only able to have two books at a time which they finish really quickly and get bored of the same books. Students need to be able to have about five books at their level in their bag.
Leveled books will help further my students' reading progress.
During their reading time I read with them independently, in guided reading groups, and with partners. I will be able to track their progress and move them accordingly. Students will be reading books that are not too hard or too easy but their just right books. During this time students will be learning skills they need to read their book with accuracy and comprehension.
