My students frequently have a parent deployed and most students do not have extended family living locally.
Our school serves as a strong support system for our students. Teachers strive to provide students with a variety of learning opportunities that will equip them to be 21st century learners.
My kindergarteners are enthusiastic, creative, and curious learners. They only need a little spark to ignite their passion for reading and learning. Five year olds are naturally interested in animals, particularly pets. I have polled my class and found that their favorite animals are dogs and cats. They also get excited when they read about children their own age. It is so important to have a library with multicultural characters as well as characters with differing abilities. All students want to feel included!
This will be my fifteenth year of teaching and my ninth year instructing in an Inclusion Kindergarten classroom. Students come with a variety of skills, strengths, and challenges. The goal of our classroom is to meet all students "where they are", to nurture them, and help them to grow both academically and socially.
My Project
Kindergartners need to experience the joy of learning how to read! Their initial exposure to reading is critical because it affects their attitude toward reading and learning.
Please help my five year olds get excited about reading!
Pets are near and dear to the hearts of kindergartners. They want to read all about the adventures of animal characters. Some of their favorite characters are Bella and Rosie, Oliver, and Jasper. I would love to introduce them to a new character, Pickles the dog.
These books are particularly important because they include multicultural characters. Every student wants to be able to read books where some of the characters look just like themselves.
By bringing this project to life, I would have enough books for students to take home and practice reading with their parents. Our school provides the lowest level books for Kindergartners. However, supplies are limited once students start advancing in reading levels.
