This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work at a Title I school. My students come from a low-income neighborhood, most receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of them are English Language Learners.
What makes my students so special, is they work so hard to overcome their obstacles every day.
They are becoming true readers and thinkers. At the age of 6 and 7, they are fascinated by all that they learn and love exploring new books. However, they are hindered by their lack of resources both at home and at school.
My Project
I currently have many students that are English Language Learners, and these readers would be an amazing addition to our class to get them started on their journey into reading.
Many are new to the country, and this is their first experience in a classroom setting.
I currently do not have enough resources for small groups and have to print out paper books for them to read.
These leveled readers are books that are on the students' reading level. Having books on your individual level is key when learning to read. These books will grow with my students, as their reading skills grow throughout the year.
My students can read them individually, or we can use them during our small guided reading groups. Using science topics, such as animals and volcanoes, will keep my first graders engaged in reading and help them on their path to becoming first grade readers!
Thank you for taking the time to read our classroom project!
