Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an urban school in a borough of New York City. Currently, I am teaching second grade. 95.7% of the students qualify for free lunch. We are part of the Reading and Writing project at Teacher's College. Many teachers (including myself) attend workshops and take courses to raise the level of our teaching.
My students need books that they can read and be excited about. About half of my students do not read at grade level. The philosophy of my school (which I wholeheartedly agree with) is that children will become better readers by reading lots of books on their own level. My classroom is filled with books for second grade readers. However, my supply of books for the children who need books that are a little easier is small. Mostly, the library for these children consists of books I was able to pick up on my own. The books I am looking to get are series books so that not only will the children have books on their levels but they will have characters they can get to know and enjoy.
I need series books that are for 1st grade readers. I am asking for books from the Berenstain Bears series, the Fly Guy series, The Pup and Hound series, and books by Leo Lionni. This way, my lower level readers who need extra support will have plenty of books to choose from. But that's not all. They'll have books that have colorful characters and meatier plots that will make them want to read more and more. Independent reading time for many of these students is grin-and-bear it time. The right series of books can change this and make independent reading time the best time of the day. I always tell the children that if you don’t enjoy your reading, then you haven’t found the right book.
In order to be good and productive citizens of our great country, these children need to be able to read. It's not just about getting a good job. It's about being able to get the information you need to make wise choices. All children are capable of being successful. Some just need a little extra support. These books are a step in giving them that extra support that they need. It's the type of support that will make a difference by making them feel special, not dumb. Help me, help them.
