We are from a Title I school located in the heart of Chinatown where many of our students come from low-income and hardworking families that value education. I have a group of kindergarteners with diverse cultural-linguistic background and learning needs, some of whom are English Language Learners and students with special needs.
My inquisitive, energetic and blissful kindergarteners are eager to learn about the world and enjoy stories through reading books!
At the beginning of kindergarten, we have started learning about names, letters, and simple sight words. In a month or so, students will be ready to use their knowledge of phonics and sight words to read simple level books (A-D) and emergent storybooks.

My Project
An effective classroom library needs to have a wide range of book selections at appropriate difficulty levels, topics, themes, and series. Research shows that beginning readers (A-D) typically need to read through 15-20 books at their levels each week in order to make adequate progress in reading. If a reader spends about 2 months at each level, which is typical for kindergarteners, he or she will need good 120-160 books at that level to read. Yet, the number of level A-D books in my new classroom is far from close to what is recommended. In order to run our reading workshop successfully, we need to include more beginning level books in our library!
These irresistible storybooks and high-interest content books at the just-right level will surely engage my beginning readers in reading workshop and beyond!
The book sets I selected from Scholastic Publication are pretty cost-effective. With an average cost of less than $1 a book, we will be able to get more than 400 new books if our project gets fully funded! They will be a great addition to our current classroom library and my guided reading book collections. Students will have a sufficient amount of books at their levels to practice reading skills throughout the year. They will gain knowledge of phonics, expand their high-frequency word bank, and learn about how stories work as well as the knowledge of the world by reading these books. They will read with greater confidence because they know these books are the books they CAN read!
