My students are second graders in an urban, 100% low-income school. Due to their home lives these students do not have access to books and have not had the opportunity of listening to quality books being read to them. Each day I see the many challenges my students face at home and in school.
"There was a scraping sound coming from the cupboard.
He slowly opened the door" (from Indian in The Cupboard). At this point my students are on the edge of their seats. Reading to them helps them visualize the story and helps builds their vocabulary. Every day after lunch I read to my students exposing them to a variety of literature.
My Project
My second grade students love to read and listen to stories. The listening center would be a place where students can sit and listen to books on CDs during small group reading instruction. I hope the listening center will keep them wanting to hear and read more books.
A child who reads will become an adult who thinks.
The listening center will allow students to listen and read books above their reading level. It will expose them to many different forms of literature. The listening center will open the students to new adventures in reading, improve word acquisition and language skills.
