It is a new year and many people resolve to become more fit! This is true for my 5th graders as well. My class is working out in FitClub after school in order to develop habits of a healthier lifestyle but my Richard Simmons videos are not 'hip' enough for them anymore! They want current technology!
My students come from low-income families, live in hotels, and many are considered homeless.
Coming from poverty, students often do not have access to healthy foods and joining a gym is NOT going to be in the budget. In addition, our town does not have side-walks or easy access to parks. You must drive everywhere and often my 5th graders do not have this luxury. However, they are motivated to work out and be fit after school.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will be used as part of an after school fitness club. Currently, students are staying after school for 2 hours each week to workout, be fit, run, practice sport skills, and generally learn to live a healthier lifestyle. However, the 'old style' fitness tapes and methods are being replaced with hit games such as Just Dance! I need to show my students that these examples of current technology can be used to live a healthier lifestyle and set us up for life long fitness goals.
I want to help show these students that being healthy comes in many forms and is not a gym membership.
It is possible to be active using the same game systems at home. The hope is that students will feel better and become life-long fitness participants!
