I teach ELLs (English Language Learners) students in an urban community where they have so much joy in learning and constantly experiencing life as they know it. ELLs must overcome many challenges, including limited schooling, trauma, and poverty. Some ELLs come from countries where education is not mandated.
My students come from many different countries with different levels of education.
I service high school students that are learning English and some are in special education. There are ELLs who travel and are constantly moving from one school to another. There are also ELLs who may attend school in their native country, but the quality of education is less than in the United States. I am also a middle school cheerleading coach.
My Project
"Just Mercy" is a film about a black man wrongly accused of murder spends six years on death row before a lawyer with the Equal Justice Initiative gets him exonerated. "Just Mercy" sheds light on the injustices of the past while also illuminating relevant issues that still exist today. Students will also be further exploring issues of injustices-in English/History class. We will regularly make connections between our daily learning and the movie. This film will be inspirational and motivational for students. The donations to this project will help students explore issues of activism, injustice, and racial identity in the past and future.
