My Students

I teach English and Social Science in a Title 1 school in central Los Angeles. Our students are very special and most of them are from economically disadvantaged homes, where parents have not been to college. We are passionate at our school to support students succeed in all ways so that they may have more options in adult life. My students LOVE reading class novels but we do not have a class novel that will help them to understand the current Black Lives Matter movement better.

I would like to buy a class set of 40 hardback books of the story

Just Mercy (Adapted for Young Adults): A True Story of the Fight for Justice. I plan on reading it as a class next year so they can be inspired by the life of Bryan Stevenson, an African-American man, who attended Harvard, became a lawyer, and has devoted his life to support victims of failures in our U.S. justice system. My students told me that the thing they enjoyed the most this year, was reading " The Outsiders". I want my students to be inspired and be encouraged by Stevenson's story, his work and his love for his fellow humans.

My Project

This will be our class set of books so students will read the story with me as a teacher, whilst also studying some of the reasons that so many African American men can be found in our U.S. prisons. I want them to be informed, but more than that I want my students to be inspired by what they can achieve with their lives, and how we can all learn from this story, how to stand up for people when we see a wrong has been committed against them. The Black Lives Matter movement means my students are living through history instead of studying it. I want them to understand in more depth, some of the inequalities people have faced, through this powerful true story. The books will be used with all my students, year in year out.
