Our school serves students in grades K-6. We strive for excellence in the areas of social/emotional growth, the arts, physical education, and academic excellence. We strive to meet students where they are and assist each student to become the very best that they can be!
Our class is made up of 21 amazing students, many of whom come from bilingual households and all qualify to receive free lunch.
It’s imperative that students have an opportunity to see themselves in the characters that they read in both fiction and nonfiction text. By engaging in text with relatable characters and characters that share similar life experiences, our class will become even more enthusiastic about reading!
My Project
Connecting to characters and characters’ experiences is not only an engaging part of reading, but the characters’ experiences can provide lessons in growing up, facing adversity, as well as learning to work with and get along with others. When students see themselves in characters, the experience is even more powerful! By providing many books that highlight characters of varied cultural and economic backgrounds, students can “see” themselves in the text. Engaging with characters that are similar to ourselves provides a way in which to learn valuable life lessons, face adverse situations, and work with others. When students can see themselves in the text they are reading, they have a context from which to read as well as higher engagement in the story itself.
