I am a first-year teacher working in a Title I district. The group of students I will be teaching are very unique and different from any other group of students I have had the pleasure of teaching over the past year. Many students in my class come from low-income households and close to 80% of my district is receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Some of my students are ELL and need extra support. It's important to me that my students have everything they need to learn, so like many teachers, I spend my own money buying supplies for my students because there are no extra funds and I want to make sure they have the essentials to be the very best learners they can be.
I want to give my students the best learning experience possible and I hope to do that by getting them the supplies they need to have a successful and productive year in second grade.
It is important to me that my students' experiences in school are meaningful and they are able to feel like part of a community, free from the stresses of things outside of school. It is my goal to support my students.
My Project
Read-aloud books are so important for students. I have selected many great titles that I think will help engage my students in meaningful class discussions. For example, the book "After the Fall" teaches students to never give up. The book "We're all Wonders" teaches students to accept people's differences and that it's okay to be different. I like to bring my students together at some point during each school day and read a story out-loud to them. Reading is important for growth, but so is listening.
With these books, I can teach my students kindness, the importance of making good choices, being a friend, diversity and perseverance.
I believe that these books have so much to offer my students and the classroom community I strive to have. I hope to have my students take something away from each read aloud and apply it into their daily lives, inside and outside of school.
