My students are warm, friendly, and curious kids who are excited to come to class and learn every day. They love asking questions and having class discussions. At 11, 12, and 13 years old, they are figuring out who they are and what their passions are. My school is a positive environment for them to be in each day. We are a Title I school where 53% of the school population receives free or reduced-price lunch, and 70% are minorities. This creates a diverse culture for students, and they are able to learn a lot from each other. The students have school spirit and drive; this shows in their daily actions.
I teach several classes including 8th grade English, 7th grade writing, and ESL Literacy Support.
I have a wide-range of reading and writing abilities and ESL levels that come in my classroom. Some of my students have recently moved to the United States from another country. All of my students, no matter if they are Entering ESL students or 8th grade English students, try their best every day and are eager to learn.
My Project
My students are on a reading roll and they want to just keep reading! Research shows that access to books is one of the keys in students becoming lifelong learners. Having a classroom library of diverse books is important for me to offer to my students to help them become habitual readers.
My students are becoming passionate readers and the books in this project will help them even more.
Graphic novels are very popular right now with my students. They feel successful when they read them and are very interested in the topics. Graphic novels like Foiled and Zita the Spacegirl will be great additions to the library for them to choose from. The new book The Prince and the Dressmaker has been recommended to my students, so I know many of them are looking forward to reading it. Reading books they are interested in will help build their reading stamina and their reading and writing skills (math too!). These books will make them even more excited about reading - which will help them in all of their academic areas as well as in life!
