I teach young adults, ages eighteen to twenty-two, with a variety of intellectual, physical and sensory impairments in our high school's Transition Program. My students are focusing their time in school on preparing for life after high school. This looks different for every student. We work with each student individually, to help them communicate and work towards their personal goals and visions for their futures.
My students are learning valuable real-life skills, such as cooking and cleaning that are useful both at home and on the job.
My students are looking forward to being as independent as possible after high school. All of my students participate in internships and jobs around our school building and in the community as part of their education.
My Project
My school is a 1:1 iPad school. Every student in the building is assigned an iPad to use for school work. My students also use their iPads for communication (some use iPads to talk), reading and writing, and completing work tasks on vocational sites.
We have one charger in the classroom, which is not enough for all of the students to charge their devices overnight so that they are ready for them to use in school the next day.
Additional chargers and a charging station will enable all of my students to plug in their iPads at the end of the day and be ready to learn when they arrive in the morning. Portable chargers will enable students that need iPads as communication devices to continue to move about the school building and communicate even if their device's battery dies.
