Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
These are unprecedented times. Never did I imagine that when my students and I said goodbye in March it would mean that it was our last day in the classroom. However, the year is not over yet!
My students and I have embarked on the distance learning journey!
We are actively engaged in all sorts of different online platforms and learning new things. My students and I maintain a connection through Zoom meetings to go over new material and to check in with each other. In addition, I am recording lessons at home for them to view and continue to learn new material. I am amazed by their level of engagement and participation, and families' willingness to try new things.
My Project
I am a kindergarten teacher at a Dual Immersion school. My students are becoming readers and writers in Spanish and English. All of them will transition to literacy learning in English in the third grade and will exit the fifth grade bilingual and bi-literate in both languages. Despite the many obstacles that they face, many of my students will have success in their specialized literacy program and gain lots of lost ground by the year's end. Having books in both languages at home will allow students to continue growing as independent and collaborative thinkers in our distance learning space. They continue to learn while being socially isolated.
