Our school serves two hundred and eleven students. We are unique in that we are a very small school with grades pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and we live in a rural area. Our school is like a family. Our students start school in pre-k and go through the eighth grade with the same group of peers. Our parent and community support is excellent and our students are high-achieving.
Our school is very active in academic competitions such as robotics, the spelling bee, history quiz bowl and science quiz bowl.
However, the economy in our area has declined and many of our families have had to move away as mines closed. Last year, we had a sixty-seven percent low-income/poverty rate.
My Project
Our Elementary/Middle School is located in a wonderful, supportive, and loving, rural community. However, we have many financial challenges as over half of our students come from low-income backgrounds.
Many of our students do not have athletic bags to carry to athletic competitions, and I have seen some carry their gear in plastic grocery bags, backpacks, and loose in hand.
Many of the teams that we play have matching warm-up suits and equipment bags. Our students would gain a great deal of self-confidence as well as school pride if they had a bag that was part of their uniforms. The bags also solve a practical need for many of these children in helping them to transport their gear. The athletic bags would also help our school in protecting our athletic gear during transportation to competitions.
