My students walk in ready to deliver and take on the tasks of the class. When they are all here, I can confidently say, "All of my favorite students are here today," as they boast about who, if any, is the actual favorite.
I teach at a K-12 school where students readily accept one another as they are.
Their camaraderie impresses me daily and allows us to dive deep into authentic learning experiences. My students' exposure to opportunities is limited in our distant, rural setting. As a result, the students love novel, new information, and are filled with curiosity.
My Project
Many have said, "a wood-shop never has enough clamps," especially one full of multiple, ongoing projects at one time. There is no worse feeling than not having enough clamps.
You've been here: you have your drill, you're empowered, ready to knock out your weekend task of repairing your picnic table.
Then, you can't find a #3 Phillips bit or a T25 torx bit or a #1 square bit to save your life, let alone save the picnic table.
Let's change scenes: you see a wall decoration hanging up at a friend's house. Maybe it's a fish clock, a wooden moose head with decorative antlers, or I don't know, an outline of your favorite place, like Michigan's Upper Peninsula ; )
You bring the wall decoration down to the school Industrial Arts lab and a student traces the outline, creates a template, and duplicates the design while thinking about grain direction, material properties, as well as feeds and speeds. They use a tool called a router, with a flush trim bit to cut everything exactly how it should be.
Our students recently received a donation of router tables and need the routers requested to take full advantage of the donated router tables for template routing activities and more.
Our students will use the clamps in every day projects to help glue up jewelry boxes and cutting boards.
Students are constantly using bits for Phillips head screws, square head screws and more. Students are also constantly looking for these bits around the shop. Students will use the Bosch custom bit case system to sort, and sustain (5S) the location of these bits.
Having clamps and bits when you need them, PLUS improved router capabilities would make your classroom experience one where you may just, as some already have, lose track of time.
