Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students brighten my day from the moment they walk into our classroom until the second they leave. As my students enter the classroom each morning, I am greeted with smiles, stories, questions, and my very favorite "Mrs. W, how are you doing over there?" My students have a wide range of disorders that affect the way that they process, understand and communicate information. My classroom consists of students that are in the 4th, 5th and 6th grade.
My students all have different abilities that require different methods of instruction and materials to help them learn to the best of their ability.
My students come to school each day knowing that more than their educational needs will be met. Our school provides each student with free breakfast, a healthy snack at recess and free lunch. Our school also has social and emotional supports for our students if they are needed.
My Project
In my classroom I have students with a wide range of reading abilities. Some of my students reading abilities are directly impacted by their learning disability. The reading abilities of my students range from a Kindergarten level to 3rd grade level. By providing my students with individual copies of James and the Giant Peach they will be able to follow along as I am reading aloud everyday. After our whole class read aloud, I will be able to group my students based on their reading ability to re-read parts of the story individually, with a partner or in a small guide group to deepen their understanding of the text.
This will allow all of my students to participate in the same class reading with the accommodations that best fit their individual needs.
These books will also help my students visually see the words that are being read aloud to them each day and make connections between words that are spoken and printed in text.
