Junior Water Quality Monitors

Help me give my students the materials to conduct a water quality investigation. The API test kits and the JNW test kits will be used for comparison in our studies.

My Students

My students are mostly of Hispanic and Latino descent. Others are from the Middle East, Vietnam, Nepal and various countries in Africa. Many are English language learners, with some in living their first year in the country. The majority of our students are from lower income communities. They love working in groups, learning through inquiry, and are culturally diverse.

I teach 7th grade science at a public middle school where students and teachers rarely have the supplies that they need for their classes.

Our district is taking steps to modernize technology but there isn't a budget for teachers to enact the vision for learning that they have by getting the supplies their students deserve.

My Project

The water quality in my school is an issue. We've had teachers in our district raise the topic of lead in our water to the school committee with no changes to our systems that I am aware of. I am concerned of the lead content and potential other contaminants in our schools water supplies. Communication to educators and students of goings on is poor.

I also want to create a sense of agency and empowerment in my students to find answers for themselves.

It would be even greater to extend their skills of water quality monitoring to local efforts within our watershed. I also run an aquarium club where water parameters are tracked on three tanks weekly. It would allow us to expand our scope in testing and deepen the learning students could achieve.

The Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest is yet another amazing opportunity that I was referred to by DonorsChoose. This inspired me to further develop the investigation I created over the summer. I initially wanted to test local water sites for learning but saw the connection to water quality within the school as relevant to my goals.

In a previous successfully funded project, I received much needed funding for technology in my classroom. The tablets I have need protection to ensure their longevity. They are showing wear and tear because of their frequent use, which is great, but doesn't provide much peace of mind given how vulnerable they are.
